Mens Blue and Yellow Wool Varsity Jacket

A wool varsity jacket has a wool blend body with leather sleeves, ribbed knit at the collar, cuffs and hem, and a snap front. This one is blue with yellow trim, fully lined, in sizes XXS to 3XL.

Why the sleeves are leather and the body is not

This is not a design flourish. The varsity jacket came out of American college athletics, where the body needed to breathe and hold warmth and the sleeves needed to survive being dragged along benches, walls and equipment. Wool for insulation, leather for abrasion. That division still works. The wool body regulates temperature far better than a full leather jacket, which is why a varsity is comfortable indoors in a way a leather bomber is not. The leather sleeves take the wear. If you have ever worn through the elbow of a wool coat you already understand the logic.

Wool blend behaves differently to cotton

It resists water for longer, it holds warmth when slightly damp, and it does not hold odour the way synthetic fleece does. It also pills, particularly under the arms and where a bag strap sits. Pilling is not a defect and it is fixable. A cheap fabric comb or a battery shaver takes it off in a few minutes and the jacket looks new again. What is not fixable is moth damage, so store it clean at the end of the season, because moths are drawn to the residue on worn wool rather than to the fibre itself.

Sizing, and the same warning as every varsity

Cut wide through the body with a low armhole, because it is built to go over a hoodie. In your usual size it will feel roomy over a tee, and that is correct rather than oversized. Size down only if you are certain you will never layer under it. Most people who send a varsity back thinking it runs large have simply worn it over a single thin layer, which is not what the pattern was drafted for.

Two colours means keeping everything else quiet

Blue body, yellow trim, leather sleeves. That is already three visual elements. Plain dark trousers and plain shoes. A white tee underneath is the safest thing you can do with a varsity and it is safe because it works. Anything patterned under a two colour jacket with a contrast stripe becomes chaotic quickly.

Care

Do not machine wash a wool and leather jacket, because the two materials need opposite treatment and whichever one you optimise for will ruin the other. Spot clean the wool, condition the leather sleeves twice a year, and use a proper dry cleaner for anything serious. Tell them it has leather sleeves before they take it.
