The jacket that gets better as it gets worse

A cotton ranch jacket is one of the very few garments where visible wear improves it. Why the collar is corduroy

Every ranch jacket has a corduroy collar and it is not decoration. Heavy cotton canvas is stiff and abrasive against the neck, particularly when new. Corduroy is soft and it stays comfortable turned up against wind. It also gives the jacket a visual break at the top, which stops a large single colour garment reading as a block. Watch for wear at the fold of the collar, since that is where a ranch jacket ages first and where the cord goes bald.

The lining decides what jacket this actually is

This is the most important specification on the page. A ranch jacket with a plain cotton lining is a three season shell. The same jacket with a blanket or quilted lining is genuinely warm and will handle a real winter. The two are sold under the same name constantly and they are not interchangeable. Check the specification table before ordering, and if you are buying this as your winter jacket, make sure the lining is doing the work.

Cotton canvas and the break in period

Heavy cotton arrives stiff. It softens with wear and washing and it takes a few weeks of use before it moves comfortably. Do not judge it in the first week. The stiffness people mistake for poor quality is actually the sign of a heavy enough fabric to last. A ranch jacket that feels soft in the box is made from cotton too light to survive the job.

Fit

Cut roomy, because it is workwear and it is drafted to go over layers. Take your usual size to wear it over a shirt or a knit. Size down only if you want it close over a tee, and be aware that a ranch jacket worn tight loses the point of the shape.

Care

If the lining is plain cotton, machine wash cold and hang dry. If it is quilted or blanket lined, do not machine wash it, because the lining and the shell shrink at different rates. Either way, stop trying to keep it clean after the first year. This is a garment that is supposed to look used.
