Mens Colour Blocked Zip Through Hoodie

Colour blocking is cut, not print

The difference matters practically as well as visually. A printed two colour hoodie is one piece of fabric with ink on it, and the ink cracks, fades and eventually lifts. A colour blocked hoodie is made from separate panels of dyed fabric sewn together. There is nothing on the surface to crack. The design lasts exactly as long as the garment does, which is the whole argument for buying panelled rather than printed.

What to check on a panelled garment

More panels means more seams, and seams on knitted fleece behave differently to seams on woven fabric. Fleece stretches. If the seams joining the panels are sewn without enough give, they pop under load, usually across the shoulder blades when you reach forward. A properly made panelled hoodie uses a stretch seam or an overlock with a stretch stitch. Pull gently across a panel seam when the garment arrives. If you can hear it straining, it will not last.

Colour matching across panels

Two different dye lots on the same garment can shift slightly out of tone over time and washing, particularly if one colour is much darker than the other. The darker panel will usually fade faster in absolute terms while the lighter one shows dirt sooner. Wash the whole garment together, always, and never try to treat one panel separately, because that is what creates a visible difference between sections.

Fit

Regular through the body. Take your usual size. Panelled construction is slightly less forgiving than a plain hoodie, because the seams sit at fixed points on the torso and a size too small puts the panel joins in the wrong place. If you are between sizes, take the larger.

Care

Zip it closed before washing so the zip does not catch and chew the fleece. Cool wash, no fabric softener, air dry. Fabric softener is worth avoiding specifically on a panelled fleece because it coats the fibres and dulls the contrast between panels, which is the only reason to own this garment rather than a plain one.
