Satin is a weave, not a fibre

This confuses people constantly and it matters when you are buying. Satin describes how the threads are woven, with most of the warp floating on the surface, which is what produces the sheen. It says nothing about what the thread is made of. Satin can be silk, polyester, nylon or a blend, and the fibre determines everything about how the jacket behaves. Polyester satin is durable and washable and it holds colour. Silk satin drapes better and is far more fragile. Check the specification table on this page for the fibre, because the word satin alone tells you nothing about what you are getting.

Ivory is the hardest colour to keep and the best one to own

A pale satin bomber is genuinely difficult. It marks easily, satin shows every stain because the smooth surface has no texture to hide anything, and the cuffs and collar will go first. What you get for that is a jacket with real presence. An ivory satin bomber is one of the very few things a man can wear that is both casual and striking, and the reason so few people own one is precisely because it takes some care. That scarcity is the appeal.

Satin snags, and there is no fixing it

This is the most important practical thing to know. Because satin has long floating threads on the surface, a catch on a watch strap, a bag zip, a rough wall or a car door pulls one of those threads out into a visible loop. A pulled thread on satin does not go back. It can sometimes be worked back through from the reverse with a needle but it usually leaves a mark. Be conscious of what you brush against, particularly at the sleeve, and take a watch off before putting the jacket on if the strap has any hardware.

Fit

Regular bomber cut. Take your usual size. Satin has no stretch at all, so unlike a cotton or fleece jacket there is no give if it is snug. It also drapes rather than holding a shape, which means it reads slightly slimmer than the same size in leather or wool. If you want it looser, size up rather than expecting the fabric to relax.

Care

Most polyester satin can be washed cold on a gentle cycle, inside out, and hung to dry. Never wring it and never tumble dry it. Do not iron the outer face directly. If it needs pressing, do it inside out on the lowest setting with a cloth between, because heat on satin flattens the sheen permanently in a patch that will not come back.
