The leather jacket you can wear to work

The seam should sit at the point where your shoulder ends and your arm begins. Further out and the sleeve hangs with a dent below the seam. Further in and the whole jacket pulls across the back. This is the measurement to check before ordering, and it is the alteration a tailor cannot easily make on leather afterwards.

Brownleather in a smart context

Brown is the right choice for a tailored jacket in a way it is not for a casual one. Brown leather has warmth and character and it reads as relaxed. Brown reads as deliberate, which is what you want when the jacket is doing a formal job. It also sits with tailored trousers, dark denim, a plain dress or a skirt without any thought. Brown demands more coordination from everything else.

Sizing a structured piece

Cut close. Take your usual size for wear over a light top or a fine knit, and go up one for anything heavier. Structured leather is the least forgiving combination in outerwear, because neither the cut nor the material gives. The relaxation you get in a soft leather jacket over the first few months does not happen here to the same degree, since the structure holds the shape deliberately.

Care

Condition twice a year with a colourless product, applied thinly and buffed off. Brown shows residue. Store it on a shaped hanger that supports the shoulder, not a thin wire one. On a structured jacket the shoulder is the whole garment, and a hanger that does not support it will deform the line permanently within months.
