A black flight bomber is a modern idea, not a historical one
Worth knowing, because most listings in this category imply otherwise. Military flight jackets were brown. Every one of them. The A2, the B3, the G1, the B15, all issued in shades of seal brown or russet, because that was what the tanning process gave and because brown hid oil and grease on a flight line. Black flight bombers came later, from civilian manufacturers who took the shape and dropped the heritage. That is not a criticism. Black is easier to wear, it does not fight with the rest of a wardrobe the way brown does, and it reads as urban rather than costume. But it does mean anybody selling you a black jacket on a story about wartime authenticity is selling you a story. The shape is authentic. The colour is a modern choice, and it is a good one.The fur collar is the part to ask about
On a jacket like this, the collar is where the money either went or did not. Real fur and faux fur behave differently. Real fur has guard hairs of varying length over a denser undercoat, so it moves in the wind and recovers its shape after being crushed. Faux fur is a uniform pile on a woven backing. It looks convincing when new, it flattens where it rubs against a seatbelt or a bag strap, and it does not spring back. Neither is wrong. Faux is cheaper, warmer than people expect, and it does not raise the ethical questions. Just know which one you are buying, and check the specification table on this page rather than the photograph, because a photograph cannot tell you. Ask one more thing: does the collar come off. A detachable collar makes the same jacket wearable across three seasons instead of one, and it is the single most useful feature a bomber like this can have.Black leather shows scuffs more than any other colour
The trade off nobody mentions when they sell you black. Black leather is the easiest colour to wear and the hardest to keep looking new. A scuff on brown leather blends into the existing variation in the hide. A scuff on black shows as a pale grey line, because the abrasion lifts pigment and exposes lighter material underneath. The fix is straightforward but you have to actually do it. Condition it twice a year, and treat scuffs early with a conditioner rather than leaving them. A black jacket that has been looked after ages into something better. A black jacket that has been ignored looks tired in two years.Fit
Regular bomber cut. Take your usual size for room over a shirt and a light knit. The ribbed hem gathers at the waist, which is what stops a bomber looking boxy. If the hem is loose on you rather than gathering, the jacket is too big regardless of what the chest measurement says. That is the check to make.Care
Condition twice a year. Wipe rain off with a dry cloth and dry at room temperature, never near a heater. Keep conditioner off the fur collar, whichever type it is. Brush the fur with a soft brush rather than combing it, and never apply heat to it. Store the jacket on a broad hanger with air around it, not sealed in plastic.Specification table

Check the specification table on this page, which states it directly. Real fur has guard hairs of varying length and recovers after being crushed. Faux fur is a uniform pile that flattens permanently where it rubs.
No. Issued flight jackets were brown, because that was what the tanning process produced and because brown hid oil on a flight line. Black bombers are a later civilian interpretation of the same shape.
More than on any other colour. Abrasion lifts pigment and leaves a pale grey line, where the same scuff on brown blends into the natural variation of the hide. Condition twice a year and treat marks early.
Your usual size, which leaves room over a shirt and a light knit. Check that the ribbed hem gathers at your waist. If it hangs loose rather than gathering, the jacket is too large whatever the chest measurement says.
