The case for the plainest version

Every extra detail on a leather jacket dates it. Belts, epaulettes, quilted panels, studs and buckles all belong to a moment, and that moment eventually passes. Buying the plain version is the least exciting decision you can make and almost always the correct one.

How the lapel changes the look

The notch lapel can be worn three ways. Folded back wide, it opens the chest and reads relaxed. Buttoned down flat across the throat, it closes the jacket up and reads sharper. Zipped fully with the lapel folded under, it becomes almost a moto jacket. Most people find one of the three and stay there, but it is worth trying all three in front of a mirror before you decide.

Viscose lining

Viscose is a smooth, cool, slightly heavier lining than polyester. It slides over a knit or a shirt sleeve without dragging, which is what you want in a jacket you take on and off several times a day. It is less insulating than a quilted polyester lining, so this is a three season jacket rather than a winter one.

Fit

Slim through the body, sitting at the hip bone. Take your usual size over a tee or a fine knit. The shoulder seam should sit on the edge of your shoulder bone, not below it, and that is the measurement worth checking first, because a tailor can adjust almost everything else on a leather jacket and cannot move the shoulder.
