Leather Jacket Size Chart for Men and Women

Measure your chest, find that number in the chart, order that size. That is the whole method. Our charts give you two numbers for every size: the actual chest measurement of the finished jacket, and the body chest it is cut to fit. Most sellers publish only one of those and leave you guessing which. Everything is measured from production samples on our own floor, in inches and centimeters, and if nothing standard fits you properly we cut made to measure.

Why the jump links matter. A contents block with anchor links near the top of a long page gives Google a set of labelled sections it can offer as sitelinks under your result, and gives an answer engine a map of what the page covers. Decrum uses one. It costs nothing and it is the cheapest structural win available here.

Find Your Size Fast

If you already know your chest measurement, this is all you need. Measure around the fullest part of your chest with a tape, then read across.

Landed on a boundary? If you measure exactly 40 inches you will see 40 in two rows. Take the smaller size if you wear the jacket over a tee or a shirt, and the larger size if you layer a knit underneath. The section on being between two sizes below explains why.

How to Measure Yourself

You need a soft tape measure and a tee shirt. Do not measure over a jumper, and do not pull the tape tight. It should sit flat against you without pressing in.

Measure your body, not a jacket you already own.

Label sizes vary enormously between brands. A large from one maker can sit two inches away from a large from another, so ordering the size printed inside a jacket you like is the single most common reason a leather jacket has to go back. Two minutes with a tape is more reliable than any label.

Chest, the measurement that decides your size

Run the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms and level across the shoulder blades at the back. Keep it flat the whole way round. Breathe normally and read the number as you breathe out, not while holding air in. For women, this is the fullest part of the bust.

Shoulder

Measure across your back from the bony point of one shoulder to the bony point of the other. This is easier with a second person. Alternatively, lay a jacket that already fits you face down and measure flat from shoulder seam to shoulder seam.

Sleeve

Start at the shoulder seam of a shirt that fits, run the tape down the outside of your arm with the elbow slightly bent, and finish at the wrist bone. The bend matters. A measurement taken with a straight arm comes out short, and you end up with sleeves that ride up every time you reach for something or hold a steering wheel.

Waist

Around your natural waist, which is the narrowest part of your torso and usually sits above the hip bone. It is higher than where your jeans sit.

The one that cannot be fixed later. The shoulder. A tailor can take in the body of a leather jacket, shorten the sleeves and move a pocket. Moving the shoulder means rebuilding the jacket, and no alterations shop will do it for less than the price of a new one. If the shoulder is wrong, the jacket is wrong.

What the Two Chest Columns Mean

Jacket chest is the finished garment measured flat and doubled. Fits body chest is the person that garment is designed for. The gap between them is called ease, and it is the room you need in order to move, breathe and wear something underneath.

Our mens jackets carry four to six inches of ease. Our womens jackets carry five to seven. So a mens medium measures 46 inches around the chest and is cut for a man measuring 40 to 42 inches. That extra room is not a mistake and it is not generosity. A jacket cut to your exact chest measurement would be unwearable the moment you crossed your arms.

Why we publish both numbers. Most sellers give you one column and do not say which it is. If a chart says medium equals 46 inches, that could mean the jacket measures 46 or that it fits a 46 inch chest, and those are two completely different jackets four inches apart. Publishing both removes the guess. When you are comparing us against another brand, check which number theirs is quoting before you conclude anything about sizing.

If You Are Between Two Sizes

This is the most common question we get, and the answer depends on one thing: what you plan to wear underneath.

  • Over a tee or a shirt: take the smaller size. Real hide has a little natural give and settles across the shoulders within a few weeks. A jacket that feels close on the first day is comfortable by the third week. A jacket taken a size up to be safe stays loose forever.
  • Over a hoodie or a heavy knit: take the larger size, or stay with the smaller one if you are buying a bomber, which already has room through the body.
  • Still not sure: email us your chest measurement and the jacket you are looking at, and we will confirm the size for that specific piece before you order. That takes a few minutes and saves a return.
Leather does not shrink back. It softens, moulds to you and gains a little across the shoulders and elbows with wear. What it does not do is recover the way a knit does. That is the entire reason to err on the tight side rather than the loose side. A leather jacket that is slightly snug becomes a jacket that fits. A leather jacket that is slightly loose stays loose.

How Fit Changes by Jacket Style

The same chest measurement behaves differently depending on the cut, so it is worth knowing what you are ordering before you choose a size.

Style How it is cut What size to take
Biker and moto Close through the chest, short body, asymmetric zip that pulls the front across True to size. A size up loses the line entirely
Cafe racer The closest fit we make. Slim body, short hem, small collar True to size. Only size up if you dislike a fitted jacket
Bomber Rib knit cuffs and hem, wider through the body True to size, or one up if you layer heavily
B3 and aviator Cut to go over a knit, heavy shearling through the body True to size. It already allows for layers
Trucker Boxier body with a squared yoke, buttons rather than a zip True to size, but it reads roomier than a biker
Blazer Structured shoulder, longer body, worn open more often than closed Follow the shoulder measurement as well as the chest
Trench and long coat Cut to go over other clothes, including tailoring Size up if you will wear it over a suit jacket

Do Leather Jackets Stretch?

Yes, a little, and only in specific places. A leather jacket gains roughly half an inch across the shoulders and softens at the elbows over the first few months of regular wear. It moulds to your shape rather than growing a size.

What it will not do is stretch across the chest to rescue a jacket that does not close, or grow a sleeve that is too short. If the zip will not meet on day one, it will not meet in six months either. Thin hides such as lambskin give slightly more than thick ones such as cowhide, but neither gives enough to change your size.

Made to Measure

If nothing in the chart fits you properly, we cut to your measurements. We make the jackets ourselves, so this is a production instruction rather than an alteration done afterwards.

It is worth doing if you sit between two sizes on chest and shoulder in opposite directions, if your arms are longer or shorter than standard, or if you are outside the range in the chart in either direction. Send us your chest, shoulder, sleeve, waist and preferred body length and we will confirm before anything is cut.

One thing to know first. A made to measure jacket is cut for you, which means it cannot be resold. Our returns policy covers alterations on made to measure pieces rather than refunds. Read that before you order, not after.

Everything you need to know about finding your size

Close through the chest and shoulders with room to move your arms, and no pulling across the back when you reach forward. The shoulder seam should sit on the edge of your shoulder bone rather than below it, the sleeves should finish at the wrist bone, and the hem should sit at your hip. A well fitting leather jacket feels slightly snug when new and settles within a few weeks.

Run a soft tape around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms and level across the shoulder blades at the back. Wear a tee shirt rather than a jumper, keep the tape flat instead of tight, and read the number while breathing normally. That measurement is what you match to our chart.

Jacket chest is the finished garment measured flat and doubled. Body chest is the person it is cut to fit. The difference between the two is called ease, and it is the room you need to move and to wear something underneath. Our mens jackets carry four to six inches of ease and our womens carry five to seven.

A 40 inch chest takes a medium in our mens sizing. The medium jacket itself measures 46 inches around the chest, which gives you six inches of ease. If you measure exactly 40 and plan to layer a knit underneath, a large will give you more room.

Only if you plan to wear a hoodie or a heavy knit underneath. For wear over a tee or a shirt, order your measured size. Leather softens and moulds to you rather than tightening, so a jacket bought a size up to be safe stays loose permanently.

A little, in specific places. A leather jacket gains roughly half an inch across the shoulders and softens at the elbows over the first few months. It moulds to your shape rather than growing a size, and it will not stretch enough to close a zip that does not meet on day one.

Yes, against our chart. Match your tape measurement to the fits body chest column rather than ordering the label size you usually buy. Sizing varies enough between brands that a label is not a reliable guide, and our chart publishes both the garment measurement and the body measurement so you can check either.

The shoulder. A tailor can take in the body and shorten the sleeves of a leather jacket, but moving the shoulder means rebuilding it. Get the shoulder right first and treat everything else as adjustable.

Yes. We cut made to measure on every leather piece. Send us your chest, shoulder, sleeve, waist and preferred body length and we will confirm the specification before anything is cut. Made to measure orders are eligible for alteration rather than refund, so check the fit details with us first.
