The jacket for the six weeks either side of summer

Most people own a winter coat and a summer nothing, and they are uncomfortable for about three months a year in between. This is the jacket for that gap. It has no insulation. That is deliberate rather than a shortcoming. What it does is block wind and take the edge off, which is the entire requirement in fifteen degree weather. An insulated jacket in that temperature is too warm within ten minutes of walking, and then you carry it.

Blue is more useful than people expect

Dark Blue sit in the same neutral role as navy in a wardrobe. They go with denim, grey, cream, brown and black without any thought, and they read as considerably less generic than another black jacket. The one thing blue does not do is sit comfortably next to other blues in a different tone. If you own olive trousers, this is not the jacket to wear with them.

Layering, which is the entire point

A lightweight bomber has to fit over things, so this is cut with room. Take your usual size and you will get a shirt or a light knit under it comfortably. It works over a hoodie too, though you should go up a size if that is your plan. A bomber with a hood pushed underneath the collar is one of the few layering combinations that genuinely looks better than either piece alone.

Where lightweight jackets fail

The lining. On a light jacket there is no bulk to hide a badly finished interior, so a thin lining stitched loosely will twist inside the sleeve and eventually tear at the armhole. It is the one thing worth checking on any lightweight jacket. Put your arm in and see whether the lining moves independently of the shell. On a well made jacket it is tacked at the armhole and it stays put.

Care

Depends on the shell material, which is in the specification table. In general, spot clean rather than machine washing, and never tumble dry anything with ribbed knit trims. Heat is what kills the elastic in the cuffs, and slack cuffs make a bomber look tired long before the shell wears out.
