The vest that does not look like a costume

Leather vests have an image problem, and it comes from a specific version of them. The one with fringing, or the one with club patches on the back, reads as a uniform. Where a leather vest actually beats a jacket

Three situations. Driving, because there is no sleeve bunching at the shoulder against a seat belt. Working with your hands, because nothing catches. And the shoulder season temperature band where a leather jacket is genuinely too warm but you want the wind off your chest. Outside those, a jacket is usually the better answer. We would rather tell you that than sell you a vest you wear twice.

Sizing a sleeveless piece

Take your usual size. Vests are more forgiving than jackets because there is no sleeve length or armhole to get wrong, and the only measurement that really matters is the chest. If you plan to wear it over a flannel shirt or a light knit rather than a tee, go up one. Leather has no stretch and a vest that is tight across the chest will not close over a layer.

Care

Condition twice a year, paying attention to the armhole edges, which take more abrasion than any other part of the garment because your arms move against them constantly. That is where a vest fails first and it is the one place people forget to treat
