Mens Down Parka

A down parka is a hooded winter coat insulated with duck or goose down rather than synthetic fibre, which makes it warmer per gram, lighter and more packable than a synthetic coat of the same warmth. This one uses 650 fill power recycled down in a ripstop shell with a relaxed cut for layering, in sizes XXS to 3XL.

650 fill is the value sweet spot, and here is the reasoning

Down quality runs roughly from 550 at the budget end to 850 at the top. 650 sits in the band where the price curve is kindest. Going from 550 to 650 buys you a noticeable step in warmth for weight. Going from 650 to 800 buys you a smaller step for a much larger price, because high fill power down comes from mature birds and there is simply less of it. For everyday winter wear, 650 is where most people should be. You are getting properly light, properly warm insulation without paying the premium that only makes sense if you are carrying the coat up a mountain. The down here is recycled, which means it has been reclaimed from previously used bedding and outerwear, cleaned and re lofted. Recycled down performs identically to new down at the same fill power. It is one of the few sustainability claims in this category with no performance trade off attached.

Why the shell is ripstop, and what that grid is

Look closely at the fabric and you will see a faint square grid woven into it. That is ripstop construction. Thicker reinforcing threads are woven in at regular intervals, so if the fabric gets punctured the tear runs into a reinforcement thread and stops instead of running the length of the panel. On a down coat this matters more than on any other garment, because a tear in the shell does not just look bad, it lets the down out. A small snag on a car door handle or a branch can empty a baffle over a week of wear. The trade off is a very slightly stiffer hand feel than a plain woven shell. It is worth it.

The relaxed fit is the point, not an accident

This is cut fuller than a technical down jacket, with a softer drape through the body. That is deliberate and it is most of what makes it an everyday coat. A slim cut down jacket looks sharp over a tee and fights you the moment you put a chunky jumper or a hoodie underneath. Compressed down does not loft, and down that does not loft does not warm you, so a tight down coat is genuinely colder than a loose one containing the same fill. A relaxed cut lets the down sit at full thickness even with a mid layer under it. It is warmer in practice than a slimmer coat that measures the same on paper. If you want the sharper silhouette, size down one and accept that it becomes a coat for a shirt and a fine knit only.

Six pockets, including two you will not expect

Two zip chest pockets, two zip hand pockets, and two deep open drop pockets set inside the front panels. Those drop pockets are the unusual ones. They are sized to take a bottle or a flask, which is exactly what they were designed for, and in normal use they are the best glove and hat pockets on any coat in this category because they are deep enough that nothing works its way out. Inside there are two large mesh stash pockets. Mesh matters here: it lets air through, so a damp hat put away in one dries instead of sitting wet against the down.

Fit

Relaxed fit. Take your usual size, and expect room for a jumper without going up. The back length is around 30 inches, which puts it at the top of the thigh on most people. That is short for a parka and long for a jacket, and it is a good compromise if you drive a lot, because a knee length coat is genuinely awkward behind a wheel. Sleeves should reach the wrist bone.

Care

Specialist down wash only, never ordinary detergent. Machine wash gentle, tumble dry low with clean tennis balls, over several cycles until the down is completely dry and fully lofted again. Store hanging, never compressed. Down kept squashed for months loses loft it does not fully recover, which is the most common way people ruin a good down coat without noticing.

Garment measurements by size. Measured flat, in inches. These cells stay empty until you send production figures. Publishing a measurement that is wrong causes returns, so I have not guessed.
