The Wanderers Jacket in Gold and Brown Satin

The Wanderers jacket is a gold and brown two tone satin club jacket, in the style worn on screen in the 1979 film of the same name. Ours is our own design in that style, with a shirt collar, a full front zip, ribbed knit cuffs and hem and two front pockets, in sizes XXS to 3XL.

Where the Wanderers jacket comes from

The film is set in the Bronx in 1963, and the jacket on screen was not invented for it. It was the real thing, the club jacket that every neighbourhood crew, bowling league and social club in America owned some version of through the 1950s and 1960s. Those jackets were cheap to produce, took embroidery well, and the sheen made a group visible across a street at night. That was the entire design brief. Light shell, ribbed knit at the openings to seal them, a shirt collar rather than a knit band, and a straight zip up the front. Two tone was practical rather than decorative. A club wanted its colours readable at distance, and a body in one colour with sleeves in another carries much further than lettering does. Gold with brown is one of the warmer combinations of the period, which is part of why the jacket in the film reads as of its moment rather than as costume. The construction has barely changed since. It is the least technical jacket anyone has ever made, and that is exactly why it survived. There is almost nothing on it that can break.

What ours is, and what it is not

Being direct about this, because you should know what you are buying. This is our own jacket, cut in the style of the club jackets of that era and of the one seen in the film. It is made under our own label. It carries no patches, no back artwork and no script. It is not official merchandise, it is not licensed, and we have no connection to the film or to anyone who made it. What you get is the garment, honestly described: the two tone satin, the shape, the trims and the colours. What you do not get is a copy of somebody else’s artwork stitched to the chest, which is not something we do on any product.

Why both panels have to be woven to the same weight

This is the thing to look at on any two tone satin jacket, and almost nobody mentions it. The body and the sleeves are two different pieces of fabric. If they are woven to different weights, the lighter one collapses against the heavier one and the jacket hangs wrong at the shoulder seam. You see it as a sleeve looking slightly deflated next to a body still holding its shape, or the other way round. It shows up again in the wash. Two satins of different weights shrink at different rates, so after a few cleans the seam between them starts to pucker and never sits flat again. Look at the shoulder seam in the photographs before you buy any two tone jacket. It should run flat with no ripple along it.

What satin does in weather, which is very little

Worth saying plainly, because a lot of listings in this category imply otherwise. This jacket is not weatherproof and it is not a hiking layer. Satin has no water repellency at all. Rain spots it, and those spots show as darker patches until the fabric dries out. The weave is smooth and tightly finished, but wind still passes through it far more readily than through cotton or wool. The light padding through the body adds some warmth in still, dry cold. That is the whole of it. Treat this as a spring and autumn jacket, or as something you wear from a car to a door in winter. If staying dry is the requirement, wear something else and save this for the evening.

The sheen shifts with the light, and that is normal

Satin reflects along the direction of the surface threads, which means the same jacket looks different depending on where you are standing. Gold satin in particular swings between a pale champagne in daylight and a much deeper brass under warm indoor bulbs. Both of those are the real colour. If the jacket in your hands looks lighter or darker than the photographs, carry it to a window before you decide anything. A photograph captures one fixed lighting condition and this fabric has several.

Fit

Cut generously through the body, in the tradition of the original club jackets, which were sized to go over a shirt and a sweater. Take your usual size. Satin has no stretch whatsoever, so there is no give if it pulls across the back. The ribbed hem gathers at the waist, which stops the extra room reading as sloppy. Size down only if you want it close and you are certain you will never layer underneath.

Care

Check the sewn in label first, because the fibre decides everything here. Most polyester satin can be washed cold on a gentle cycle, inside out, and hung to dry. Never tumble dry it and never wring it out. Do not iron the outer face at any temperature. Heat flattens the sheen in a patch that never recovers, and it is the most common way people ruin a satin jacket. If it needs pressing, turn it inside out, use the lowest setting, and keep a cloth between the iron and the fabric. Satin also snags. A watch strap, a bag zip or a car door catches one of the surface threads and pulls it into a visible loop that does not fully go back. Take a watch off before putting the jacket on if the strap carries hardware.

Garment measurements by size. Measured flat, in inches. These cells stay empty until you send production figures. Publishing a measurement that is wrong causes returns, so I have not guessed.
