What an A2 actually is

The A2 was standard issue to United States Army Air Forces pilots from 1931. Every detail on it was solving a problem in an unheated cockpit. The knit cuffs and waistband sealed out draught. The shirt collar sat flat under a harness. The button flap over the zip stopped wind coming through the teeth. None of that is necessary now, but the proportions it produced have outlasted almost every other jacket design of the century.

Why the rib knit waistband is the whole silhouette

A bomber gathers at the waist and blouses above it. That is what separates it from every other leather jacket. On a woman it creates a shape that a straight hemmed jacket cannot: volume through the body, then a clean stop at the narrowest point. It is also the most forgiving leather jacket cut, because the knit does the fitting rather than the leather.

Goatskin, and why it suits this jacket

Goatskin has a fine pebbled grain and natural water resistance, and it is tougher than lambskin without the weight of cowhide. The rub off finish means a darker top colour has been applied over a lighter base, so the high points of the grain lighten as the jacket wears. On a brown A2 that is the point. It is the only leather jacket in this collection designed to look better in five years than it does new.

Sizing a bomber

Size for the shoulder and let the knit handle the rest. A bomber has more room through the body than a biker or a moto, so this is the one cut here that will take a light knit or a thin hoodie underneath. Check the waistband measurement before you order, because the knit is what sets the fit and it is not adjustable.
