Waterproof plus down is a harder combination than it sounds

Down is the warmest insulation per gram available. Its single weakness is that it collapses when wet and stops working. The obvious answer is to put a waterproof shell over it. The problem is that a fully waterproof shell also traps the moisture your body produces, and a down coat that gets damp from the inside fails exactly the same way as one that gets damp from the outside. That is why the shell here is a two layer breathable construction rather than a simple coated fabric. The membrane blocks liquid water coming in while letting water vapour out, which keeps the down dry from both directions. The seams are taped, which is the part to check on any coat claiming to be waterproof. Every stitch is a hole, and a high performing fabric with untapped seams leaks along the shoulders where a bag strap presses. The result is a down coat you can wear in sustained rain, which most down coats are not.

The water repellent finish is free from fluorinated chemicals

The surface treatment that makes rain bead up used to rely on per and polyfluorinated compounds, which persist in the environment more or less indefinitely. This one does not use them. That is a meaningful environmental improvement rather than a marketing line. It comes with one honest trade off worth knowing: the newer treatments generally do not last as many wash cycles as the old fluorinated ones. Plan to reproof with a spray on treatment about once a season, or whenever you notice the outer fabric soaking up water rather than beading it off. That is not a defect. It is the cost of the fabric not being permanent pollution, and reproofing takes ten minutes.

The details that separate this from a cheaper parka

Thumbhole inner cuffs. There is a soft elasticated cuff inside the sleeve with a thumbhole. It seals the wrist independently of the outer cuff, so the gap between glove and sleeve closes completely. This is where most people actually get cold and most coats ignore it. Internal waist shockcord. A drawcord hidden inside the waistband lets you pull the coat in without a visible belt or toggle. Cinched, the silhouette is defined and warm air stays trapped. Released, it hangs straight. It is the same function as a belt with none of the visual weight. Zip off hood trim. The faux fur ruff zips off rather than popping off, which is more secure and leaves a cleaner edge. Take it off before washing. Welt hand pockets with covered zips. The zip sits under a fabric flap so water cannot track down the zip teeth into the pocket, which is exactly how hand pockets leak on cheaper coats.

Fit

Standard fit, cut roomy enough to layer. Sized to the bust. Mid thigh length, which is the warmest practical length for everyday use. It covers the femoral arteries at the top of the thigh, which is a genuinely large contributor to how warm a coat feels, and it still lets you sit down and climb stairs without gathering fabric. The waist shockcord gives you real adjustment, so if you are between sizes take the larger and cinch it in.

Care

Specialist down wash, never ordinary detergent. Remove the fur trim first. Tumble dry on low with clean tennis balls over several cycles until the down is fully lofted and completely dry. Reproof the outer once a season. Store hanging, never compressed.
