Short parka or long parka, and how to actually decide

A parka is defined by its length, so a short parka sounds like a contradiction. It is not, and the distinction is worth understanding before you buy either. A long parka covering the thigh is warmer, straightforwardly. It covers more of you, and specifically it covers the top of the thigh where large blood vessels run close to the surface. A short parka trades some of that warmth for three things. It is far easier to sit down in, which matters if you drive or take public transport. It does not gather and crease behind the knees. 700 fill power with an 80 to 20 blend

Two numbers here and they measure different things. 700 fill power describes the quality of the down. It sits above the 650 that most everyday parkas use and below the 800 that expedition kit uses. That places this coat firmly in the premium band, and it is why it can be this warm while staying this slim. 80 to 20 describes the mix: 80 percent down cluster to 20 percent feather. Feather is heavier and less lofty than down but adds structure and resilience, and a small proportion of it stops the fill migrating within the baffles. A pure 100 percent down fill sounds better but is not necessarily better in a coat cut this close. The down is responsibly certified, which means the supply chain has been independently audited to confirm the birds were not live plucked or force fed.

The leather trim is beautiful and it has one consequence you must know

There is cow leather trim on this coat. It looks excellent and it will patinate over years. Here is the thing nobody puts on the product page: leather and down have opposite cleaning requirements, and leather wins. A down coat wants to go in a machine with a specialist down wash. Leather cannot go in a machine at all, under any circumstances. Water and detergent strip the oils out of leather, and it dries stiff, cracked and several shades lighter. So this coat cannot be washed at home. It needs professional cleaning by a specialist who handles leather and suede, and it needs it from a place that understands down as well. Any detachable trim should come off before cleaning. Everything else goes to the specialist. I would rather you knew this before buying than found out in year two. It is the price of the leather, and for a lot of people it is worth paying because a coat like this gets cleaned perhaps once every two seasons anyway. But if you want something you can throw in the machine, buy one of the fur free parkas in this category instead.

The concealed placket

The front zip is hidden behind a flap, so the face of the coat is a clean unbroken black panel with no hardware showing. That is the detail doing most of the work visually. A visible zip and exposed studs read as technical outerwear. Hide them and the same coat reads as tailoring, which is the entire point of a short black parka. It also functions: a covered zip cannot let wind through the teeth, which is a genuine cold spot on coats with exposed zips.

Fit

True to size, cut close to the body in a city silhouette rather than a relaxed outdoor one. Take your usual size over a shirt or a fine knit. Go up one if you want a jumper underneath, and be aware that a close cut down coat compresses its own fill when overloaded, which makes it colder rather than warmer. Hip length. Sleeves should reach the wrist bone.

Care

Do not machine wash. Do not hand wash. There is leather on this coat. Remove any detachable trim, then take it to a professional cleaner who specialises in leather and suede and who also handles down. Tell them it is a down filled garment when you drop it off, because the drying process is different. Store hanging with air around it, out of direct light, never in plastic. Leather trim needs to breathe.
