A long leather coat is a commitment and worth being honest about

This is not a jacket you wear casually into a supermarket. It has presence, it is heavy, and it changes how you move. Some people want exactly that and some people order one, wear it twice and put it away. The way to tell which you are is to ask whether you own and regularly wear a long wool overcoat. If you do, this will suit you. If long coats generally feel like too much on you, leather will feel like considerably more, because the weight and the sheen amplify everything a wool coat does quietly.

Length and how it hangs

The drape of a long leather coat depends almost entirely on the weight of the hide. Too light and it flaps and creases at the back of the knee. Too heavy and it pulls on the shoulders and becomes exhausting to wear for a whole day. There is a narrow band that works, and getting it right is the difference between a coat that moves with you and one that fights you. The shoulder carries everything

On a coat this long, all the weight hangs from the shoulder seam. If the shoulder is even slightly wrong, the whole coat sits badly and no amount of adjustment anywhere else will fix it. Sleeves and body length are straightforward alterations on leather. Shoulders are not, so get that measurement right at the ordering stage.

Wearing it

Underneath it wants simple, dark and slim. Anything bulky under a long leather coat destroys the line, which is the only reason to own one. Footwear matters more than usual because the hem draws the eye down. Boots work. Trainers generally do not, because the coat is formal in its proportions even though the material is not.

Storage, which is different for a long coat
