What 600 fill power actually buys you

Fill power does not tell you how warm the coat is. It tells you the quality of the down. A 600 fill parka packed generously will beat an 800 fill parka with barely any in it. What 600 fill reliably gets you is a good balance: genuinely warm, noticeably lighter than a synthetic coat of the same warmth, and considerably cheaper than the same warmth at 800 fill. For everyday winter use in a city, this is the sensible band to buy in and paying up to 800 mostly buys you less weight.

Water repellent is not waterproof, and you should know the difference

The finish on this coat makes water bead up and roll off. In a shower, in snow, on a walk from the car to a door, that works well. It is not a waterproof coat. There is no bonded membrane and the seams are not taped. In sustained rain, water will eventually work through, and once down gets wet it clumps and stops insulating until it fully dries. I would rather say this plainly than let it arrive as a disappointment. This is a cold weather coat that handles wet weather, not a wet weather coat. If you commute on foot in a rainy climate, buy something seam sealed instead. The hood comes off, and that changes what the coat is

With the hood on, this is a technical winter parka. With it off, it is a clean collared down coat that works over tailoring and reads considerably less sporty. That is worth more than most single features at this price, and it is the reason to choose a removable hood over a fixed one even though a fixed hood usually looks slightly neater. Two details make this one work properly. The hood opening has a placket with hidden snaps rather than exposed poppers, so the neckline still looks finished when the hood is off. And the cinch cord sits at the back with a low profile lock, so it tightens the hood without a cord dangling in your eyeline.

Fit

Sized to the bust, so measure rather than going by a dress size. Down adds loft everywhere, so check the shoulder first. A down coat that fits the shoulder will almost always work through the body. This style runs small. If you are between sizes, take the larger one. That is worth knowing before you order, because a down parka that is slightly tight compresses its own insulation and gets measurably colder as a result. Compressed down does not loft, and down that does not loft does not warm you.

Care

Wash rarely, and when you do, use a specialist down wash rather than normal detergent. Ordinary detergent strips the natural oils that let down loft, and a coat washed that way never fully recovers. Machine wash gentle, then tumble dry on low with a few clean tennis balls to break up the clumps. This takes several cycles and it cannot be rushed. A down coat put away damp will mildew from the inside. Store it hanging with air around it, never compressed in a vacuum bag over summer.
